One of my favorite Psalms is the second as it asserts God's supremacy over all earthly rule. I am so grateful that the church, and not the government, is the hope of the world. Having said that, this is [...]
I recently shared a favorite Einstein quote in one of my posts. It became the seed to a session entitled Normalizing Absurdity that I will be doing at Leadership Networks Innovation Cubed Conference in January. Check out their [...]
Have you ever noticed how certain phrases become part of a culture's conversation style? Some are memorable and become "buzz-worthy" (heard that before?) or create culture by sharing ideas and ideals. Others just create verbal fatigue with overuse and [...]
I was excited to see Church Unique listed in Leadership Journal's "Golden Canon." The article opening begins with a quote from Spurgeon: "A student will find that his mental constitution is more affected by one good book thoroughly mastered [...]
Drucker asserts that focus is the primary challenge for leading nonprofits. Here are three quotes from Five Questions:“… the great majority of nonprofits can be graded “C” at best. Not for lack of effort; most of them work very [...]
I spent the day with 20 other consultants discussing Drucker's five organizational questions. My favorite part of the day was Bob Buford's personal thoughts on the life and legacy of Peter Drucker. Buford's respect for Drucker is immense. [...]
On Wednesday I will be participating in a unique training experience on "The Drucker 5." In 1993, Peter Drucker wrote about 5 key assessment questions for non-profits. Recently these questions have been republished in an inspiring tool [...]
I am excited to be doing a Church Unique workshop in St. Louis on thursday this week. My friend at Rusty Lewis at Generis is sponsoring the event. Read my description of the event and if your [...]
I spent all day yesterday in a personal coaching session, trying to apply the benefits of the "strategic outsider" (the basis of my life and ministry) to myself. We discussed a principle articulated by Brian Klemmer a leadership development [...]
Have you ever heard of Puritan theology blended with the seeker church movement? Many folks ask me about my home church these days. When I am not consulting I attend Clear Creek Community Church in League City, TX, [...]
I want you and your ministry to experience the benefits of stunning, God-given clarity. As a pastor turned vision coach, I’ve worked with an unprecedented variety of churches from growing mega-churches and missional communities, to mainline revitalization and church plants. I started several interconnected organizations that help the church embody the movement that Jesus founded. My visionary planning tools, the Vision Frame and the Horizon Storyline are used by thousands of churches every year through my calling to raise up other consultants and trainers. In 2004, I founded Auxano, which I sold to LifeWay and continued to lead until 2020. In 2014, I created Younique to deliver gospel-centered life design through the church. It is now the world's only comprehensive, open-source life plan system.
In 2023, I founded Run Free as my official team-based consulting shop. We deliver the most innovative Vision Framing experiences available to church teams through the "Pivvot Process" and to network/denominational leaders through the "Denominee Process." We also offer team coaching to church leaders using the "Performance Practices" of meta-performance executive coaching.
I've written seven books: Future Church, Church Unique, Younique, Clarity Spiral, God Dreams, Innovating Discipleship, and Building Leaders. I enjoy speaking about clarity, calling, disciple-making, and vision. It's all about helping one another do more than we can imagine. I co-locate in Houston and Chile with my wife, Romy, and the last of my four children, Poema.
