During the lead team meeting at Faithbridge UMC in North Houston, Ken Werlein regularly challenges his team with this question. Questions are one of the leaders greatest tools, and this one is a bazooka! This question polarizes reality for the team to see good options for what they are: enemy to the best things that God wants you to do. In the acceleration of Godâs blessing and ministry âsuccessâ a clear calling and focused strategy can quickly evaporate. Why? With success options multiply exponentially. Before you know it too many good things become distractions in disguise. Good things dilute and pollute the God things. The question is how do leaders effectively stay focused and what features in the leadership culture, and decision-making structures empower the ability to say âno.â In todayâs situation, Faithbridge is considering a new ministry initiative that is still in the process of discernment. Kenâs charge to the team is not to get to excited about the opportunity until a window of prayer and exploration is complete. This single question goes a long way in not only fostering team ownership but the conviction to let good opportunities pass by. As Howard Hendricks says about focus: the secret to concentration is elimination.
